A great little gift that will be the talk of the party

Are you on a quest for that quintessentially English birthday present? One that can only be described by the words brilliant, wonderful, or charming? One that also costs under £12? Then I have found the perfect thing.

I popped along to Fortnum & Mason’s the other day with the simple idea of grabbing some fancy tea for a friend of mine’s birthday dinner party. I was after something small yet fun. However, what I found was so exceptional that I feel I must share my good fortune.

It turns out that Fortnum’s – the Royal-warrant holding department store – sells more than just their world-renowned hampers and tea. They sell biscuits! In fact, they sell musical biscuits!

£11.95 will afford you a “Musical Birthday Biscuit Tin” in either blue for a boy or pink for a girl. It has a little winder-up on the bottom, and give it just a few turns and it will ping out the sweetest tune of happy birthday you have ever heard. It had all my friends clapping in delight, even the boys! Plus, you also get some incredibly yummy shortbread, lemon curd and chocolate pearl biscuits.

PS. Don’t worry if you can’t make it to the store in person, you can order online using the following links:

Blue Musical Birthday Biscuit Tin

Pink Musical Birthday Biscuit Tin

PPS. Check out a picture of the pink ones below.

This market boutique in Spitalfields is a treasure trove of feminine gifts.

The store, simply named 4 U Flowers is next to the impressive wedge-shaped building that is a bustling Patisserie Valerie, full of croissant-lovers like Crunchyprices web designer Tom. Everyday, 4 U Flowers sets out an enticing floral display outside the store for the office workers pouring out for lunch from nearby Allen & Overy and RBS.

Inside, the store is crammed with beautiful, whimsical gifts and objects for the kitchen and garden.

You can pick up something really pretty and at a decent price to spruce up the home for summer. I found a nice embroidered hotwater bottle cover. My mum is a fan of this store too!

We'd like to take a little time to talk Facebook, Twitter, and all things Social!

As we approach the holiday season what better time to bring you up to speed on some of the additions we have been making to the Crunchy Prices network.

With the aim of not only providing you with the best deals in the City, but also convenient platforms to share the information with your friends, we would like to bring your attention to two of Crunchy Prices’ most useful Social Network resources.

Firstly, our new Facebook Fan Page provides you with the opportunity to view, comment on and share our latest deals without needing to miss a second of that all important Facebook chat.

In addition our Twitter Page continues to be updated on a post-by-post basis, allowing you to share and Tweet on these deals as you feel fit.

So get involved and let us know your thoughts via either Facebook or Twitter as your opinions really will shape the way we continue to build this site and hunt down the best deals this city has to offer.

Finally, you may have noticed the new “Subscribe To Our Newsletter” box on the right hand side of the website – by subscribing we will continue to provide you great deals at your convenience via way of a weekly Digest email distributed by Rosie. We will never intentionally give your email address to a third party, and cancelling your subscription at any point is a doddle, so really, what do you have to lose?

Happy Crunching!

Cheaper than Ikea and better looking than something from Habitat: Buy your furniture at auction!

For your benefit (and because I quite want a new chest of draws) this week I have spent some time looking into the best places to go to buy furniture at auction.

The place to visit is Criterion Auctions.

They have auctions every Monday at 5pm at two locations in London: One in Islington and one near Clapham Junction. Previews are on Friday afternoons and all day Saturday and Sunday 10am -6pm.

We visited their Clapham showroom/auction house. They sell everything from paintings to rugs to dining tables to beautiful chiffoniers with prices ranging from £20 to £2000. Things are often much cheaper than even Ikea and much nicer – you can pick up mahogany dining tables for as little as £80 or sets of chairs for £10 each.

Also, don’t worry if you can’t make it on Monday, you can commission bid by phone or you can write a bid on paper if you visit the showroom (as I did).

You can also check out their catalogue online- but I really wouldn’t recommend bidding based solely on looking at those pictures, it is amazing how different some of the things look in the flesh. Just pop along to one of the preview days – they have plenty of parking.

Happy Crunching!
